BASIS Independent McLean doesn’t just provide students camp opportunities to learn about writing and math throughout summer. Camp programs like social justice and fantasy fiction teach children to look at bigger issues beyond school academics. The Social Justice summer camp captured social events that changed the course of history in America, exploring the changes that occurred, from the Jim Crow South to the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968. It analyzed the importance of Dr. King’s non-violent, civil obedient marches through the South through the eyes of two young female protagonists, Scout Finch and Lily Owens. The camp helps support a historical and literary focus, as well as critical thinking.

“Summer camps are intended to help students explore their environment beyond just academics, and that’s exactly what this Social Justice camp is about,” said Sean Aiken, head of school at BASIS Independent McLean of McLean, a preschool-grade 12 private school, teaching the BASIS Curriculum. “Students are being introduced to the classic novel, ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ and the more contemporary story of ‘The Secret Life of Bees’,” said Aiken.
