The McLean High baseball team gave one of the Northern Region’s annual powerhouse programs, Lake Braddock, a huge scare on Monday’s Memorial Day when the Highlanders rallied to tie the game in the latter innings. Ultimately, the home team Bruins won the Northern Region second round (quarterfinals) playoff game in extra innings, 6-5.

Oakton High Receives Blue Ribbon Award

Oakton High School’s Performing Arts Department is the recipient of a Virginia Music Educators Association Blue Ribbon School Award for 2011-2012. This award is also known as "the Performing Arts Department’s Standardized Test" according to Oakton’s Orchestra teacher Debra Myers. Back in February a panel of judges at the District Festival assessed the performance of Oakton’s band, chorus and orchestra. On May 11, Oakton was honored with a Blue Ribbon Award.

Madeira Student Reaches Out to Orphans in Thailand
Charlotte Heffelmire, of Vienna, is a freshman at the Madeira School and spent her spring break in the tropics, but not to sunbathe and enjoy the beach. Instead, she presented several thousand dollars to the Pattaya Orphanage near the Gulf of Siam in Thailand. For the last several years Charlotte has been working and saving her money as well as collecting donations to help the orphans in Thailand.

A few weeks ago I received my new Voter Card from the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was dated March 30, 2012. There were two facts of great interest to me: The voting location for my Chesterbook (302) precinct has moved from Arleigh Burke Pavilion to St Dunstan's Episcopal Church another half mile southwest on Kirby Road. This is due to the construction of 75 new apartment homes and a new community center at Vinson Hall, which should be completed in three years.

The Langley Saxons defeated the Oakton Cougars in a Northern Region boys’ lacrosse semifinals playoff game last Thursday, May 24. The McLean High girls’ soccer standout, on the field of play, looks as if she was born to excel in the sport, with her ability to maintain and control the ball in the midfield, her natural instincts and feel for the game which seem to always have her at the most opportune place to make a play, and her all out hustle and easily recognizable passion for the game.

In her year on the Earth, Gianna Hess has already been through more than enough medical procedures. She was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare form of liver cancer, and on Feb. 21 had a biopsy done, which confirmed that the cancer had spread, in the form of three lung nodules.

To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the McLean Orchestra, Wayne Winston Sharp, President of the Board of Trustees, announced a Spring Campaign to raise "$40,000 for the 40th" by the end of the season on June 30. Sharp noted that this will place the orchestra in a stronger financial position to help underwrite live classical music performances, made possible by the orchestra’s 85 professional musicians. Most of the more than 10,000 people who are expected to come to McLean Day this year can only ever remember the festival being produced by the McLean Community Center (MCC). However, for years after it began in the 1900s, McLean Day was the "step-child" of many community organizations before it was officially adopted by MCC in the 1970s.

The Brainy Bunch First Lego League (FLL) team, which includes six 8th grade Kilmer Middle School students, won 2nd Place overall in the Research category at the FLL World Invitational Open hosted by the University of South Florida and Legoland on May 3-6. The Brainy Bunch earned the honor of representing Virginia and D.C. at the World Festival by winning the 1st place overall Grand Champion Award at the VA/DC State tournament in December.

Longfellow’s Science Olympians Win State Championship
Longfellow Middle School is celebrating its Science Olympiad team’s recent victory in the Virginia state championship. This year’s state tournament featured 29 schools, including local rival Kilmer MS, which had narrowly defeated Longfellow last year. This time, Longfellow pulled well clear of the competition with an outstanding performance: team members won the gold medal in 12 of the tournament’s 23 events, and placed second or third in 8 other events.

The Great Falls Citizens Association’s Seniors Group hosted their meeting with new membership Wednesday, May 2, as group mainstays were joined by representatives from local churches and Fairfax County. The group, which was founded last year and has been seeking input from local residents, started planning their first event and laid out plans for a year’s worth of events, starting this September.

Milburn Sanders, 90, joined the Great Falls Volunteer Fire Department (then known as the Forestville Fire Department) seven days after it opened on May 5, 1952. Seventy years later, he was part of the celebration at a new building, with generations of volunteer and career firefighters that came after him.

The McLean High School PTSA hosted a meeting Wednesday, May 2 to discuss the McLean High School pyramid-specific results from the 2010 Fairfax County Youth Survey. The annual survey, which is filled out by eighth, 10th and 12th graders (as well as a modified version taken by sixth graders) is meant to gather data on student behavior, both positive and negative.

Great Falls Artist Earns Honorable Mention in Watercolor Exhibition
The Charles H. Taylor Art Center in Hampton, Va. is currently hosting the 33rd annual Virginia Watercolor Societies Exhibition. Juried and judged by N.C. artist, Dan Smith, with 494 entries by 175 artists across the state, the work of Great Falls artist, Betty Ganley, a painting capturing the "mood" of a misty morning in a Maine boatyard, was awarded an Honorable Mention and has been hailed by the judge as "a traditional boat composition, docked for repair … I found the virtuosity of the watercolor application remarkable."

Housing discrimination cases have been on the rise in Fairfax County in the past few years. And the Office of Human Rights and Equity Programs (OHREP), the agency that enforces fair housing laws in the county, is shining a spotlight on the problem through seminars for housing providers, realtors, community groups and other interested parties. "Sadly, housing discrimination is alive and well and we’ve seen an uptick in complaints during the past six years," said Kenneth Saunders, executive director of OHREP.

Eleanor Weck, or Ele to her friends, spent more than four decades in Great Falls. As a tireless advocate for nature and trails, she spent much of her time in Riverbend Park. Weck passed away last May at the age of 72, and on Saturday, April 28, family and friends gathered to dedicate a permanent tribute in the park.

McLean Softball on Course for Strong Finish
Highlanders are 8-2 in the strong Liberty District.
Over the course of the high school girls' softball season, the McLean Highlanders have shown upward progress and gotten better and better. There have been a few lopsided losses to some exceptional opponents, but the Liberty District team has consistently responded with strong bounce-back games and improved play. All things considered, this spring's Highlanders have displayed both fortitude and talent, with an 11-4 overall record.
